Herz, du kannst meine Sehnsucht! (Heart! You Know My Longing) (Fr.Grothe/ W.Dehmel) Lied aus d. Tonfilm „Die Schloβ in Flandern(Castle In Flanders) Marta Eggerth mit Orchesterbegl. unter persönl. Leitung d. Komponisten Fr. Grothe (Orchestra under personal direction by the Composer, Fr.Grothe), Odeon 1936 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Marta EGGERTH was born in 1912 in Budapest. Considered a child prodigy, she studied music in Budapest and first went on the music stage as a very young girl. In 1929, she was also discovered for film, shooting her first and only Hungarian picture, Csak egy kislány van a világon (There Is Only One Girl in the World) directed by Béla Gaál, which was subsequently dubbed. In 1930, the composer Emeryk Kálmán invited Marta Eggerth, who was in Vienna at the time, to Hamburg to appear in the title role in his operetta "The Violet of Montmartre". This was where she was discovered by a filmmaker, also of Hungarian origin, Géza von Cziffra, who immediately recommended her to director Richard Eichberg. Thanks to her natural beauty and excellently trained and delicate soprano, in 1931 Marta Eggerth was such a great success that during one year she played the main parts in four films (Der Draufgänger, Let's Love and Laugh, Eine Nacht im Grandhotel, Trara um Liebe). Up to 1938, the talented and extremely popular Marta Eggerth sang, danced and entertained audiences in more than thirty German, Austrian, English and Italian operetta and musical films. Her screen partners included the most famous German actors: Hans Albers, Gustav Frölich, Hans Sönker, Georg Alexander, Paul Hörbiger. Apart from making films, she was a frequent guest of recording studios, where she made 54 records in 1931-1938, all of them also great triumphs. In 1936, she married one of the grand tenors of the 20th century, a handsome Polish singer JAN KIEPURA (1902-1966), who was also one of the UFA (German Movie Company) stars at the time. They appeared together in the film "My Heart Is Calling You" (1934) and on stage. In 1938 they emigrated to the United States via Vienna and Paris. As a measure of their U.S. success, one can quote the fact that they sang the leading parts in Franz Lehárs "The Merry Widow" over a thousand times. After World War II, they returned to giving guest performances in Europe. In 1952, they appeared in the main roles in a film version of Lehárs operetta "Land of Smiles", and in 1957 Marta Eggerth took on a major project the role of the singer in the film "Frühling in Berlin" (Spring in Berlin). Unfortunately, Kiepuras career declined and he died of a hart attack in New York, in 1966. She, in her late 90s, is still active - e.g. being in ligation with Polish gorvernment for restitution of her and Jan Kiepuras pre-war property in a mountain resort Krynica the luxurious hotel „Patria, „nationalized by the communists after 1945.

Hungarian-born American singer-actress Marta Eggerth has maintained her performing career for over 70 years. Here we hear her sing "Que J'aime Paris." It almost defies belief, hearing her at 90, that she is, indeed, 90 years of age. Unlike most sopranos advanced in years, her upper register ...
