This tagging operation is a "small scale tagging operation" planned within the framework of the large-scale IOTC tagging program. A large-scale program has been highly recommended by the IOTC scientific committee for many years, and approved by its commission in 2001. This tagging has been conducted jointly by Spanish (IEO/AZTI) and French scientists (IRD) with the support of an Australian scientist from CSIRO.
