"A man is ultimately measured by what he does in relation to his times. And the fact that we do our assigned duty adequately may not be enough. Sometimes we must step out and sound the alarm." -Dennis Chavez Born in the small, Hispanic working class neighborhood of Barelas in Albuquerque, Dennis Chavez became an outstanding figure in Latino politics. With charm, intelligence and unwavering belief, he championed civil liberties for an entire nation. As New Mexico's longtime senator, serving from 1935 to 1962, the socially conscious Chávez was the only minority in the US Senate. A maverick, he tirelessly fought against the discrimination he witnessed and experienced. The civil rights legislation that finally passed Congress in the 1960s grew directly out of Chávez's efforts in the 1940s, as he became a leading advocate for minorities nationwide. Chávez also led the anti-McCarthy protests, and became a close confidant of former U.S. Presidents Harry S. Truman and John F. Kennedy. Chávez's role in American history has been largely overlooked, until now. El Senador reveals the public and private life of a man who represented Hispanics nationwide with strength and dignity. Oftentimes standing alone, Chavez life's story is one of determination and of the belief in the American ideals of liberty and justice for all. His gravestone reads, "Dejo este Senor una vereda trazada aque nunca se olvidara lo hizo con la esperanza de que otros la sigan." "This man blazed a trail that will never be forgotten. He did it with the hope that others will follow." Originally broadcast on New Mexico PBS station KNME.
