The Dhole (Cuon alpines) is a fairly small member of the canine family, weighing in at 20-45 lbs. Though diminutive on an individual scale, as a pack, they can be ferocious enemies. Throughout history, dholes have reflected their tenacity in fearless contest against prey, leopards, and even tigers. Some people do not believe this is possible, but according to Arcane, a big cat enthusiast, what many westerner's doubt as truth, it is a well known fact in India. She provided a list of literature that has, throughout the ages, cited the relentless reputation of the dhole in dispute with leopards, tigers, and even bears. "The wild dogs of India go under the name of Buansa, Dhole, and Kolsun, are found in Nepal, the Nilgiris, Coromandel, the Dekkan, etc...They kill tigers and cheetahs, and the remains of hogs and deer are to be found in their path." Anecdotes of the Habits and Instinct of Animals - 2007 "Dhole will kill tigers and bears that compete with them for kills." - The Welfare of Dogs - 2006. "Schaller (1967) reports that packs of dholes are capable of driving a tiger (panthera tigris), 10 times their size, from kills." The Biology and Conservation of Wild Canids 2004 "One fear is about the dhole is that a high density population can supress tiger and leopard populations" On Jim Corbett's trail and Other Tales from Tree-tops - 2004 "Tigers and leopards take flight after a clash with a pack of dholes, perhaps over the ownership of a kill, and they are frequently forced to take to trees. If caught, the pack can overwhelm and kill individual big cats." International Wildlife Encyclopedia - 2001 "Dholes hunt various Mammals, generally associating in packs of up to 30 individuals; they usually hunt prey such as deer and wild sheep but are reported to attack animals as large as tigers and bears." Students Britannica India - 2000 "The dhole, or red dog, is the most dreaded by the natives, and many are the stories they tell of its ferocity and determination. They say it will even attack a tiger and drive it off its kill." Sport and Adventure in the Indian Jungle - 1904 "And even the Tiger will snarlingly relinquish his kill to the dhole." The Monist - 1898 "There is a persistent tradition that the dhole hunt and kill the tiger. The general belief of the wild tribes of India is borne out by two stories told by Colonel Baldwin of their attacking the bear and the tiger, which put the fact beyond doubt. A bear was found by an English officer standing at bay before the dogs. He had killed one, but his hide and body were torn in strips by the bites of the pack. In the other case, the fresh bones of a tiger were found, from which the flesh had been eaten; one paw still remained whole, and close by lay the freshly killed bodies of three wild dogs which had fallen in the night." Animals At Work And Play - 1897 "They are said to be quite fearless toward all other denizens of the jungle and do not hesitate to attack tigers, wild-boars, or leopards. A pack of dholes are said to be equal to the task of killing even the royal-Bengal-tiger, and the natives will tell you that fierce battles between the two are waged daily in the depths of the jungle, and that the dholes are always victorious. The natives believe, in fact, that the dholes enjoy fighting tigers better than anything else, and they are always on the warp-path after these striped monsters, and that they hunt down weaker game only to satisfy their hunger." St. Nicholas, Some Asiatic Dogs - 1890 "The panther, the wild bull, the tiger...fall an easy prey before a pack of wild dogs. The natives asser that they kill tigers and cheetahs (these cats once roamed Asia) and there is no doubt of the fact." Dogs - 1874 "But the Dhole is apparently the only animal that, although individually so far the inferior of its fierce prey, in size, strength, and activity, his sufficient confidence in its united powers, to chase and kill the terrible tiger." Woods Animal Kingdom - 1870 "Not withstanding the immense power and activity of tigers, it is asserted that not even the largest can hold out against the dholes." Sporting Magazine - 1808 Arcane finds it important to note that Tigers will harm dholes as well, taking their young, charging drifters, or killing loners whenever feasibly possible. If desperate, or confident in the presence of a small pack, a tiger may even force dholes from their kill. List provided by Arcane
