From the High Renaissance to the Baroque, the patrons of art shifted to the churches, whose agenda was simple, to create art that drew people to churches and renewed their faith. From this arose a near transcendental art. Art which not only captured emotion and expression, but acquired a dynamic nature unlike ever before, played with light and shadow and colour, to produce art both powerfully moving and direct in expression. The show ends with my favourite baroque artists Diego Velasquez from Spain and Rembrandt from the Netherlands, and deals with their respective masterpieces of Las Meninas and the Nightwatch (which oddly enough broke the mould and had nothing to do with religion, but had the power of expression of the art of the time, with enough subtelty and nuance to render them immortal).Oh, and there's also Carravagio in the beginnning dealing with Italy, but you probably already figured that out. With him and El Greco came the genesis of Baroque.
