This is for the Intellectual 'Deep' Travellers who know where they're arranging their 4x4/Camel-Hiking Safaris. Where better than the incredible 'identity' of Alexandria to start your exploration from? Now what makes one an Alexandrian? Here's an extract by Jacques Hassoun (originally in French): "My great-grandfather Ibrahim Skandarani Hacohen was born in Alexandria. "I am a foreigner. My grandmother Gohara(Giulia) Ibrahim Hacohen resided for some years in the Wakelet el Lomoun section of Alexandria. "I am a foreigner. My grandmother's husband Ya'qub Hassoun lived in Souk el Turk, and if you go to Souk al Tabakhin, many still know today who Umm Sa'd was, my aunt who died fifteen years ago, ' a foreigner.' "I am a foreigner. My father Da'ud Ya'qub Hassoun and his father Ya'qub Habib Hassoun were born in Mansourah. My great grandfather Habib Yusuf Hassoun was born in Mehalle Al-Kubra and his father Yousef Habib Hassoun was born in Khelwett Al-Ghalban close to Kouesna. "I am a true foreigner. "Perhaps my ancestors, who were foreigners, joyfully welcomed Amr Ibn El' Ass when he arrived in Alexandria and found 40,000 Jews there. "But let us return to my birthplace Alexandria, amazing city..." (end of quote here) The Alex SaharaSafaris team, after several top secret meetings and black opts missions that were with the aim of rummaging through their bookshelves to choose the suitable....text(s), and after long deliberations and negotiations they have come up with these findings and are making this announcement....:) We have chosen an article from Amkenah Magazine, about Alexandria as the main text (uploaded on the SaharaSafaris Forum). The article "ÑæÍ ÇáÅÓßäÏÑíÉ æÑÇÆÍÊåÇ" (The Spirit of Alexandria and its Smell,) is by Khaled Fahmy the Egyptian academic and 'revisionist' historian teaching at NYU author of "All the Pasha's Men." There will be other texts that will be read out, and other media material presented during the discussion. And that is not all ... make sure to put on comfy shoes, we will be enjoying a short walk in the city' old streets after the discussion. We will be waiting for you, 1:00pm at ACAF, 10 Hussein Hassab Street, Flat 6, Azarita, Alexandria. For those who want to get the hardcopy of the article, Amkenah Magazine is available in Diwan bookstore and TownHouse gallery. The Spirit of Alexandria, Amkenah Magazine, issue n#7, December 2005, p57-73.
